How long do you get to bid on a UK public contract?

Published 1 September 2026 · updated 1 September 2026 · 5 min read

All figures cover notices published since 1 January 2026 and were measured against the Scalebiz database on 1 September 2026. They are not a snapshot of what is open today: counting only live notices quietly removes every short deadline, because those have already closed.

Short answer: the median UK notice gives you 31 days from publication to the closing date, and only 10% close within two weeks. The UK sits with the EU on timing, not with the US, and two thirds of its notices publish a contract value.

The number, measured

Across 460 UK notices published on Find a Tender since 1 January 2026, the median gap between publication and the closing date is 31 days. A quarter close within 28 days and a quarter stay open past 34. Only 10% close inside two weeks, and 5% inside one.

That tight spread is the story. The UK does not have a fast lane and a slow lane; it has one lane, a few days either side of a month, across 247 distinct buying bodies.

Why this page covers the whole market, not each sector

Find a Tender published 460 notices in this cohort. TED published 18,344 and SAM.gov 14,457 over the same window. Splitting 460 notices across fifteen sectors would produce pages with twenty notices behind them, and a median built on twenty notices is a number you should not plan against.

So this page states the market once, honestly, and shows where the volume actually sits:

CPV divisionNoticesMedian
Health and social work services13131 d
Construction work5530 d
Repair and maintenance services3630 d
Architectural, construction, engineering and inspection services3431 d
Business services: law, marketing, consulting, recruitment, printing and security2331 d
IT services: consulting, software development, Internet and support2231 d
Sewage, refuse, cleaning and environmental services1931 d
Laboratory, optical and precision equipments1532 d

Health and social work alone is more than a quarter of everything published. Note how little the median moves between sectors — 30 to 32 days throughout. In the US the same spread runs from 7 days to 21.

How the UK compares

Construction is the one category with enough UK volume to compare directly. On CPV division 45, the UK median is 30 days against 14 in the United States and 32 in Germany. The UK sits with the EU, not with the US — which is what you would expect from a market that kept the shape of the directive after leaving it.

The Procurement Act 2023 changed the framework, not the clock. If you are bidding from outside the UK, the practical planning number is a month, the same as most of the EU.

What the notice tells you

66% of UK notices carry a published contract value. That is far above the US, where the public layer of SAM.gov publishes none at all, and above most of the EU. For a bidder deciding where to spend qualification time, the UK is the market where you can size the opportunity before you open the specification.

What this means in practice

  1. A month is the planning number. With 90% of notices running longer than two weeks, the UK rewards a considered bid rather than a fast one.
  2. Volume, not speed, is the UK constraint. 460 notices in eight months means the question is whether anything fits at all, not whether you can answer in time.
  3. Use the published value early. Two thirds of notices carry one; it is the cheapest disqualifier you have.

What we do not know

This guide is one part of a bigger picture. For how this compares with the other routes — grants, tenders, guarantees, subsidised debt and equity — see business funding in the EU, US and UK.

Response windows measured on 1 September 2026 over 460 UK notices published since 1 January 2026 in the Scalebiz database, from UK Find a Tender — not over the notices open on that date. US and German comparison figures cover 2,050 and 1,400 CPV division 45 notices from SAM.gov and TED over the same window.
